Range Rover History
The Range Rover brand has been around for a long time, but while you may know about the Land Rover company history, do you know the Range Rover came to be? Take a walk back in time with Land Rover Princeton to explore the Range Rover history, different Range Rover models, and find out the best Range Rover year.
The first Range Rover was revealed in 1970 and right away became known as one of the most luxurious SUV models. Designers, engineers, and executives behind the Range Rover brand kept the first prototype a secret and named it Velar, which is an Italian word meaning “to cover.” Once the concept was successfully tested, the first three-door Range Rover was revealed to the world. Drivers flocked to this vehicle not only for its high-end design and quality materials, but also for its permanent four-wheel drive and split tailgate system.
After a decade of success, the Range Rover Classic was launched in 1981 as a four-door vehicle, providing more options to Range Rover drivers and fans alike. Keeping true to its luxury materials and same eclectic design, the Range Rover lineup continued to grow in popularity throughout the 1980s.
In 1994, the second-generation Range Rover came to fruition. This lineup included the rectangular headlights still found on the vehicles today. In addition, the new Range Rover generation included more luxury features and design accents than the first generation, giving drivers more to love.
The third generation Range Rover lineup was built with a unibody style, and the hull was designed from the tapering on the Italian Riva speedboat. During this generation, other Range Rover models started to come onto the market, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Stormer, Range Rover LRX, and Range Rover Evoque.
In 2012, Range Rover launched the fourth generation of this luxury SUV lineup, and changes included a lightweight aluminum body and floating roofline. Over the next few years, Land Rover brought more Range Rover concepts to the streets, such as the Range Rover SVR, Range Rover Sport SVR, Range Rover SVAutobiography, and Range Rover convertible. In addition, the Range Rover Velar also came back in a new version, proving that the Range Rover models never go out of style.
